Very low levels of radioactive substances in Norwegian farmed Atlantic salmon
The levels of the anthropogenic radionuclide 137Cs in farmed salmon are about three orders of magnitude lower than the maximum permitted level for radioactive cesium in food set by the Norwegian authorities after the Chernobyl accident.
Levels of anthropogenic radionuclides in fish feed are likewise very low.
The levels of anthropogenic and natural radionuclides found in farmed salmon in a study in 2016 are comparable to or lower than the levels found in other fish species in the North Atlantic Ocean.
Any potential health risk caused by the levels of radionuclides found in farmed salmon in the present study will be very low and should be of no concern to the consumer.
