Personal import of food to Norway
Due to the risk of travellers importing diseases into Norway and the EU, all personal consignments of meat and milk and their products are prohibited to enter Norway from third countries (countries outside EU/EEA). On this webpage, you'll find information about the exceptions from this main rule.
The kinds and amounts of goods you may bring into Norway for personal use or consumption, vary with the country of origin and whether the foods are of animal or non-animal origin.
These are the exceptions from the prohibition
Powdered infant milk, infant food and special foods
Powdered infant milk, infant food and special foodsrequired for medical reasons provided that:
- the total amount is less than 2 kilograms
- the product does not require refrigeration before consumption
- it is a packaged proprietary brand product
- the packaging is unbroken
- the product is not infant milk or infant food from China
Faroe Islands and Greenland
Personal consignments of meat and milk and their products from the Faeroe Islands and Greenland with a combined total weight that does not exceed 5 kg.
For fishery products (fish and certain shellfish), you may bring up to 20 kg without submitting it for veterinary control. No restriction for such goods from the Faeroe Islands and Greenland.
Meat and milk and their products from certain countries
Personal consignments of meat and milk and their products from (for private use only):
- Andorra
- Iceland
- Liechtenstein
- San Marino
- Switzerland
Exemptions from the rules previously explained
The following products are exempted from the rules explained previously:
- bread, cakes, biscuits, chocolate and confectionery (including sweets) not mixed or filled with meat product,
- food supplements packaged for the final consumer,
- meat extracts and meat concentrates,
- olives stuffed with fish,
- pasta and noodles not mixed or filled with meat product,
- soup stocks and flavourings packaged for the final consumer.
Other consignments of meat and milk and their products into Norway or EU
You may only bring in other consignments of meat and milk and their products into Norway or EU if:
- you have obtained the necessary documentation from the official veterinary services of the country from which you are travelling stating that the goods conform to the requirements for entry into the EU; and
- you declare any such goods and present your documentation on your arrival to an authorised EU border control post for control.
For food of animal origin other than meat and milk and their products, you may bring up to 1 kg without submitting it for control.
Customs
All animal products not conforming to these rules must be surrendered on arrival to Norway or in the EU for official disposal. Failure to declare such items may result in criminal prosecution.
