Trauma is among the most common causes of mortality worldwide, accounting for about a tenth of the deaths occurring every year. In almost half the cases, loss of life after trauma can be ascribed to uncontrolled bleeding.
Aim:
After completing the ASAP course training the participants (i.e. emergency medical service personnel and emergency physicians) will learn techniques to effectively diagnose and stop both external and internal bleedings and to evacuate blood from the chest cavity and pericardial space.
Animals:
A previously described porcine model will be used. We apply for a total 40 pigs in 2018 and 2019.
Level of stress (belastninggrad): Moderate
The animals will experience little to moderate stress and pain. A previosly used sedation, anesthesia and analgesia protocol will be used. The following acute skills and procedures (ASAP) will be done: Intra osseous drilling, use of tourniquets to stop distal bleeding, compression of bleeding in the groin, extended-FAST ultrasound examination, needle thoracentesis, inserting of chest drain and clam-shell thoracotomy to evacuate fluid from the chest cavity and pericardial space. Finally, they will learn techniques to stop bleedings from the heart and lungs and how to do internal cardiac massage. Learning value: High
This is the only live biomedical model where the ASAP principles to stop bleedings can be performed.
3 R`s:
Multiple skills and procedures will be demonstrated, performed and practiced by all the participants to fully utilize each porcine model. This will be done at the approved operating theatre
at NMBU at Høyland in Sandnes.
