96 hour fish acute toxicity test with Halibut exposed to sodium dioctyl sulphosuccinate and Petroleum distillate
1 Purpose
The test is required to be performed for the purpose of the Harmonized Offshore Chemical Notification Format (HOCNF). These data are needed to determine if the substance can be used in offshore oil and gas installations.
2 Distress
The test will be performed at a threshold concentration of both substances based on either the 48 hour acute crustacean test or the 72 hour algal toxicity test which will be performed prior to the fish test. This is because there should be no lethal effects on the fish at this concentration and therefore should be no distress experienced by the fish.
3 Expected benefit
The test will ensure that any of the chemicals used for offshore purposes should not cause an effect on aquatic organisms in the marine environment.
4 Number of animals, and what kind
The fish will be hallibut as these are commercially available and the number of fish will be as specified in the OECD test guideline 203 which will mean 7 fish in the control and 7 fish per test substance so a total of 21 fish in total.
5 How to adhere to 3R
The test is as specified in the OECD test guideline so this is already pre prescribed but the minimum possible number per concentration will be used (i.e. 7 per concentration) also the threshold approach will be used so there will be no requirement for a full dose response test to be established and there should be no lethality or stress to the fish. In addition, a shared control will be used in order to avoid any additional fish being required.
