This study will allow us to have new insights in the disease development caused by Piscirickettsia salmonis in Atlantic salmon using the two genogroups identified in the bacteria, LF89 and EM90, as different species with distinctive features. A co-infection of both strains may imply a different disease dynamic during Salmonid Rickettsial Septicaemia (SRS) that have never been assessed.

In this experiment, we plan to compare bacteria growth rates during infection with previous co-cultures in cell-free media. Also, by expression genes analyses we can elucidate if there is any change in the expression profile when the bacteria are alone or together, which may suggest a synergistic effect under in vivo conditions.

We will use 12 salmon (Salmo salar) for this trial.

We will use the lowest number of fish needed to have reliable results.
