Availability to Atlantic salmon of free lysine from differing sources
1 Purpose
To assess the availability of commercially available sources of free lysine to Atlantic salmon.
2 Distress
Fish will be subjected to moderate deficiency of dietary lysine. This, however, is not documented to cause major distress to the fish, other than an increased possibility of fin erosion, and reduced growth and feed efficiency.
3 Expected benefit
Defining the efficiency of utilisation will allow optimisation of the inclusion of the studied sources of free lysine in diets for Atlantic salmon, ensuring sufficient is provided to enhance fish health and growth, while also reducing wastage of excess raw materials.
4 Number of animals, and what kind
1950 Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) post-smolt
5 How to adhere to 3R
In vitro assays were considered but cannot replace in vivo trials in this case as they are unable to reliably model whole-body interactive amino acid metabolism. Fish numbers used in this experiment have been reduced to the fewest possible without compromising the validity of the results. Appropriate anaesthesia will be used to reduce discomfort where possible; and appropriate humane endpoints have been identified and will be considered in the management of the experiment.
