This pilot trial aims to demonstrate pathogenicity of a virus that was recently isolated from Atlantic salmon tissue. The clinical significance of the virus is not known as the virus has not been previously studied elsewhere. The fish may develop clinical signs, and humane endpoints will apply.

Virus x may be of importance for the health of wild or farmed salmonids, or it may be another aquatic animal virus that does not cause disease in fish. If the virus causes disease in farmed salmon, the socioeconomic impact may be substantial. In this case, a deeper underrstanding of this virus will be instrumental in the development of countermeasures against the disease.

This pilot trial will include 30 Atlantic salmon smolts and 30 rainbow trout. Blood and tissue samples will be taken at the end of the trial. The objective of the trial is to demonstrate pathogenicity of Virus x for Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout, and sampling tissues from infected fish.
